Critical Security Update: July 28, 2024 (X/Twitter, WhatsApp, Microsoft Update)
Critical Security Update
X/Twitter, WhatsApp, Microsoft Update
Risk 1: Low
Issue: X (Twitter) has started using user posts to train Grok AI, its new AI chat platform. This was done quietly and without user notification. Since users should not be posting confidential or PII data on X, there is minimal concern for release. However, many users may not want their posts being used for model training.
Resolution: Users not wanting this feature can disable it under Settings and Privacy.
Risk 2: High
Issue: The latest version of WhatsApp (for Windows) has a small security flaw that allows execution of scripts upon receipt. This is highly dangerous and could result in the unauthorized release of data.
Resolution: WhatsApp users should refrain from using the Windows App until Meta releases an update. So far, no time schedule has been announced.
Risk 3: High
Issue: Microsoft released a large cumulative and security update today including 32 security and patch updates, including 2 zero-day (or known and exposed) vulnerabilities.
Resolution: Windows users should update their system to apply the new security updates.
