Critical Security Update
Two Microsoft Updates
Risk 1: Low
Issue: This may not seem like a security update, but hear me out. Microsoft just started waiving the fees for developers to publish in the Microsoft Store (this is similar to the App Store and Google Play Store). Their reasoning is that they are trying to attract more attention and developers to their storefront, which has some of the lowest attraction rate and downloads. Why is this listed under security updates? Other platforms have migrated to this low-cost or free publication method and been inundated with malware, poorly designed applications, and malicious code.
Resolution: As this migration happens, please be extra cautious of apps you install, even if in Microsoft’s storefront. It is typically best to go directly to the organizations/developer’s website and download from the source whenever possible.
Express extreme concern when looking at a developer you do not recognize.
Risk 2: Medium
Issue: Microsoft has announced a mid-sized update that includes about 95 small fixes. These fixes include a correction to the streaming issue that was announced several weeks ago.
Resolution: Windows users should apply the update whenever convenient. There are not currently any known large-scale security-related fixes in this update.
