Microsoft Replaces the BSOD with....the BSOD
After 4 decades, Microsoft kills off the Blue Screen of Death
Since 1985, Microsoft has used a bright blue error screen, commonly called the Blue Screen of Death, to draw attention to unrecoverable errors that occur while operating your Windows-based computer. These errors are typically the result of poorly written code or device drivers (software that helps your hardware devices work with your operating system) that weren’t properly executed. The blue was originally selected as it was a calming color, designed to reduce user stress during a system error.
However, in July 2025, Microsoft has made a change to the Windows 11 error screen and the BLUE Screen of Death will now be the BLACK Screen of Death.
While the color shift may appear to be mostly cosmetic, the change is part of a much larger initiative to improve system stability and recovery efforts including a broader system recovery process designed to reduce downtime. This is known as the Windows Resiliency Initiative. Part of this effort is directly in response to the CrowdStrike incident in July 2024 that impacted thousands of systems globally..
There is nothing specific a user needs to do to migrate to the updated process; your system will apply these changes with the next Windows 11 update.
